Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Agar Overview

Agar Agar is a type of polysaccharide that is extracted from red algae. It is used as a gelling agent in food, pharmaceuticals, and other products. In cooking, agar is commonly used to make jellies, puddings, and other desserts. It is also used in scientific laboratories as a solid growth medium for microorganisms (i.e., an agar petri dish). Agar is a vegetarian alternative to gelatin, and is a food rich in certain minerals, vitamins, and dietary fiber.

Hydroxychloroquine Overview

  • Hydroxychloroquine is used to prevent and treat acute attacks of malaria in adults and children weighing more than 31 kg (68 lbs). It is also used to treat discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE; a chronic inflammatory condition of the skin) or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus; an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks healthy parts of the body such as joints, skin, blood vessels, and organs) and rheumatoid arthritis. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called antimalarials and is also an antirheumatic drug. It works by killing the organisms that cause malaria. Hydroxychloroquine may work to treat rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus by decreasing the activity of the immune system.
