Interaction Details
Amphetamine is classified as belonging to the following category: Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (Maois)
Combining serotonergic drugs such as a nonselective monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) with 5-HTP, a constituent of Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract, might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders such as Call-Fleming syndrome. A case report describes a 60 year old man who was stable on phenelzine 75 mg daily, pramipexole, zolpidem, quetiapine, and intermittent prednisone. He started taking 5-HTP 300 mg daily with immediate improvement in depressive symptoms. However, within 2 weeks he developed manic symptoms and hyperreflexia. Although he stopped treatment with 5-HTP, symptoms did not improve until he was hospitalized 12 days later and treated with increasing doses of quetiapine. It is not clear if taking Griffonia simplicifolia in combination with MAOIs might have the same effects. MAOIs include isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), and tranylcypromine (Parnate).
