In clinical trials, 5-HTP, a constituent of Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract, has been associated with drowsiness and somnolence. It is not clear if taking Griffonia simplicifolia in combination with CNS depressants might have the same effects. Theoretically, concomitant use of Griffonia simplicifolia with medications that cause sedation might have additive effects. Some CNS depressants include clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others.

Griffonia Simplicifolia Overview
Griffonia simplicifolia is a perennial shrub native to West and Central Africa. The plant has small, white flowers and dark green leaves, and it produces long, thin pods containing shiny, black seeds. The seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia are used in herbal medicine as a natural source of 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), a precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin. The seed contains approximately 6% to 10% 5-HTP.
