American Spikenard Aralia racemosa, also known as American spikenard, is a woody, flowering perennial native to eastern North America. It is characterized by its large, compound leaves and clusters of small white flowers that bloom in late summer to early fall. The rhizome and root of American spikenard have been traditionally used in herbal medicine for their purported expectorant and diaphoretic effects. However, there is insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness for asthma or the common cold. American spikenard is known to have several classes of bioactive components, such as petroselinic acid, triterpenoid saponins, sterols, diterpenoids, and acetylenic lipids.
