Arenaria Rubra Arenaria rubra, or sandwort, is a low-growing herb found in North America, Europe, Russia, Asia, and Australia. Its above-ground parts are used medicinally and contain triterpene saponins, resins, phenolic compounds (including C-glycosyl flavones), organic acids (oxalic, citric, malic, quinic, fumaric), and fatty acids (azelaic, myristic, palmitic, linoleic, linolenic, stearic). Studies suggest it inhibits alpha-glucosidase, impacting carbohydrate digestion, and has antioxidant effects against superoxide, nitric oxide, and DPPH free radicals. It also inhibits acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase, potentially useful in Alzheimer's treatment by increasing acetylcholine availability for brain receptors.
