Aspen Aspen, also known as Populus tremuloides, is a deciduous tree that can reach heights of up to 40 meters. It is native to many cool temperate regions of the world. Aspen bark and leaf are used orally for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, prostatitis, sciatica, neuropathic pain, and urinary tract infections. Aspen contains salicin, a plant salicylate, which may lead to similar adverse effects as aspirin when taken orally. Some studies suggest that aspen, when combined with other herbs, may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
