How Does Mommy's Bliss Gripe Water Work To Treat Colic?

Gripe water is not a standardized formula, and different gripe water products generally contain different ingredients.

Mommy's Bliss Gripe Water contains two herbal ingredients, ginger and fennel seed.

Fennel Seed Evidence For Colic

Let's start with fennel seed.

Research suggests that fennel may be a potential solution for reducing crying time in infants with colic. However, one of the problems when evaluating research in this regard is that the majority of studies conducted so far have examined fennel in combination with other ingredients, so it's hard to discern if fennel alone is helpful.

A meta-analysis of three small clinical trials indicates that administering fennel to infants with colic can lead to a reduction in crying time of approximately 72 minutes daily, compared to a placebo. However, the placebo response rate was also high in these studies.

In another study that solely used fennel, giving 5-20 mL of fennel seed oil 0.1% emulsion daily for a week resulted in relief from colic in 65% of infants, as opposed to 24% who received a placebo.

Overall, most studies evaluating fennel seed note at least minor positive effects with little to no side effects.

Ginger Evidence For Colic

Ginger has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for various ailments, including digestive issues like colic in infants.

Ginger's active compounds, such as gingerols, are known to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects that may help soothe the gut and relieve colic symptoms.

Additionally, ginger has been found to have carminative properties (i.e., gas-reducing properties) that could aid in reducing gas and bloating in the intestines, which can contribute to colic.

Overall, ginger's potential mechanisms of action make it a promising natural remedy for colic in infants, but specific studies evaluating its effectiveness are lacking.

Sodium Bicarbonate Evidence

Sodium bicarbonate is an important component of Mommy's Bliss Gripe Water.

Sodium bicarbonate, which is also commonly known as baking soda, is a well-known acid-neutralizer.

If excess stomach acid is at least partially responsible for your infant's symptoms, sodium bicarbonate will likely help provide at least mild relief.
