Filgrastim falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's some good news that should ease your mind. The concern on file is about agar's gel possibly blocking the absorption of oral medicines from the gut. But filgrastim (Neupogen) isn't a pill you swallow, it's given as an injection under the skin or into a vein. That means it skips your digestive tract entirely, so agar's swelling fiber gel never gets a chance to interfere with it.

On top of that, this listed interaction is only theoretical and comes from animal feeding studies, not real patient data. So for your filgrastim, agar shouldn't change how well it boosts your white blood cells. As always, it's smart to run any new supplement past your pharmacist or oncology team, especially during chemo.

It is generally considered safe as a food, but you should drink plenty of water with it and check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement.

About Filgrastim Injection

What Is Filgrastim Injection Used For?

Brand name: Neupogen

Filgrastim injection (available as Neupogen, Nivestym, and Releuko) is used to lower the risk of serious infection in people whose white blood cell counts drop dangerously low. This can happen during chemotherapy for cancer, during treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), or after bone marrow transplantation. It is also used to help move stem cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream so they can be collected for transplantation.

In addition, filgrastim is used long-term to reduce infections in people with severe chronic neutropenia — including congenital neutropenia, cyclic neutropenia, and idiopathic neutropenia. Neupogen is also indicated to increase survival in patients acutely exposed to radiation doses that suppress the bone marrow (Hematopoietic Syndrome of Acute Radiation Syndrome).
