Why this applies to Mitoxantrone

Mitoxantrone falls under ANTITUMOR ANTIBIOTICS — the group Turmeric interacts with.

Turmeric has antioxidant effects. Theoretically, this may reduce the activity of chemotherapy drugs that generate free radicals. However, research is conflicting.
In vitro and animal research shows that curcumin, a constituent of turmeric, inhibits doxorubicin-induced apoptosis of breast cancer cells by up to 65%. However, curcumin does not seem to affect the apoptosis capacity of daunorubicin. In fact, some research shows that curcumin might augment the cytotoxic effects of antitumor antibiotics, increasing their effectiveness. Reasons for the discrepancies may relate to the dose of curcumin and the chemotherapeutic agent. Lower doses of curcumin might have antioxidant effects while higher doses might have pro-oxidant effects. More evidence is needed to determine what effects, if any, antioxidants such as turmeric have on antitumor antibiotics.

Here's the thinking behind mixing turmeric with mitoxantrone. Part of how mitoxantrone fights MS overactivity and cancer cells involves generating reactive molecules called free radicals. Curcumin, the active piece of turmeric, acts as an antioxidant, so in theory it could mop up some of those free radicals and blunt how well the drug works. But honestly, the picture is murky. Some lab and animal studies suggest curcumin might actually boost certain antitumor antibiotics rather than weaken them.

The key thing to know is this concern comes only from test-tube and animal research, not from people, so it's quite speculative. Mitoxantrone itself can be hard on the heart and the bone marrow, so it's not a drug to experiment around. Please don't start a concentrated turmeric supplement during treatment without first checking with your oncology team or pharmacist. A sprinkle of turmeric in cooking is a different story and unlikely to matter.

What Is Mitoxantrone Injection Used For?

Brand name: Novantrone

Mitoxantrone Injection is used to reduce neurologic disability and the frequency of relapses in adults with secondary progressive, progressive relapsing, or worsening relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS). It is not indicated for primary progressive MS.

Mitoxantrone Injection, in combination with corticosteroids, is also used as initial chemotherapy for pain related to advanced hormone-refractory prostate cancer. In combination with other approved drugs, it is used in the initial treatment of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) in adults, which includes several subtypes such as myelogenous, promyelocytic, monocytic, and erythroid acute leukemias.
