What’s inside

Full disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Full

Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: glucomannan, a water-soluble dietary fiber derived from the konjac plant. It works by absorbing water in your digestive tract and forming a thick, gel-like substance that adds bulk to stool and slows digestion.

The product contains absolutely no other inactive ingredients or fillers — it's just the fiber itself in powder form.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: weight management and digestive health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Constipation, Obesity, Hyperlipidemia, Diabetes, Metabolic syndrome, appetite control — and 2 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Glucomannan is rated "Possibly Effective" for Constipation (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Glucomannan is rated "Possibly Effective" for Diabetes, Hyperlipidemia.
  • Also on file: Glucomannan is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Obesity, Metabolic syndrome.

Glucomannan has Possibly Effective ratings for constipation, diabetes blood sugar control, and high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia). For high blood pressure, the evidence isn't established well enough to rate it.

This means the research suggests it may help with those three conditions, but more study is needed to be certain.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Glucomannan is generally well tolerated when you drink plenty of water with it — in fact, water is essential. The main concern is choking or blockage of your esophagus or intestines, especially if you swallow the dry powder or don't drink enough liquid.

Common side effects include abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, and vomiting, particularly if you take more than 3 grams daily. During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety data — talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

The same goes for breastfeeding; caution is advised because we know little about its safety in that situation.

Before you start, check any oral medications you take with your pharmacist or doctor. Glucomannan has a Moderate interaction with oral drugs in general because it may decrease how well your body absorbs them.

Taking it at least 2 hours before or after your medications can help lower this risk.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Glucomannan is a soluble fiber that may help with constipation, blood sugar, or cholesterol — but only if you take it with plenty of water and away from your medications. If you're on any oral drugs, check with your pharmacist or doctor first, because this fiber can reduce how well medications are absorbed.

Oral Drugs

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

100% Pure Glucomannan by NutraBio: Common Questions

Does 100% Pure Glucomannan by NutraBio interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, 100% Pure Glucomannan has a known interaction with 2,022 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
100% Pure Glucomannan contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Do I really need to drink that much water with it?
Yes. Glucomannan absorbs water and swells in your digestive tract — that's how it works. Without enough liquid, it can cause choking or blockage, which is serious. Take it with a full glass of water or other liquid every time.
Can I take it at the same time as my other medications?
No. Because glucomannan may reduce how well your body absorbs oral drugs, it's safest to take it at least 2 hours away from any other medication. Talk with your pharmacist about the best timing for your specific prescriptions.
Will it make me bloated or gassy?
It can. Abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation are common, especially if you take more than 3 grams a day. Starting with a smaller dose and increasing slowly, plus drinking plenty of water, may help your body adjust.
Is it safe to use while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough reliable safety data for pregnancy, so talk with your doctor before using it. For breastfeeding, we know little about its safety — again, your doctor or pharmacist can give you personalized advice based on your situation.
What is glucomannan and where does it come from?
Glucomannan is a water-soluble dietary fiber from the konjac plant. It absorbs water in your digestive tract and forms a thick gel that adds bulk to stool and slows digestion, which is why it may help with constipation and blood sugar control.
