Thyme oil is well tolerated when eaten as food or tea, but concentrated essential oil can be toxic if swallowed; medicinal doses carry uncertain risks. Clove is safe as a food spice but concentrated clove oil is potentially toxic, especially for children—as little as 5–10 mL has caused serious harm in kids.

Oregano is safe in normal food amounts, but medicinal supplement doses are less studied. All three oils can cause contact dermatitis or skin irritation when applied topically, and oral use may trigger allergic reactions in sensitive people.

Thyme may cause headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or heartburn; clove may cause similar symptoms plus liver damage in rare cases; oregano may cause gastrointestinal upset or, rarely, anaphylaxis. Oregano is possibly unsafe in pregnancy; thyme and clove are rated likely safe.
