Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
L-Theanine Relax contains one active ingredient: L-theanine 200 mg per tablet. L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea that's thought to promote relaxation and calm without causing drowsiness.
The tablet also contains inactive ingredients — dextrose, mannitol, cellulose, stearic acid, natural flavor, sucralose, silicon dioxide, and magnesium stearate — which serve as fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Not established
L-theanine is possibly effective for supporting cognitive function, according to the evidence we have on file. For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and cancer, the evidence is insufficient to rate whether it works — we simply don't have enough reliable data to say one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults for short-term use, though long-term safety hasn't been well studied. Some people report headaches, drowsiness, longer sleep, or more vivid dreams.
One pediatric case of facial tics was reported after starting theanine, but the child had a history of tics and they stopped when the supplement was discontinued, so a direct link wasn't established. The safety data advises against using this supplement during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — there isn't enough information to know it's safe for either.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking L-Theanine Relax if you use blood pressure medications (the moderate concern here), sedatives or other CNS depressants, or serotonergic antidepressants. The blood pressure interaction is the most serious — theanine can potentiate their effect.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Theanine Relax may help with cognitive function and is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults. If you take blood pressure medication or sedatives, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — theanine can lower blood pressure and may amplify sedative effects.

L-Theanine Relax 200 mg Refreshing Mint by GNC Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Theanine Relax 200 mg by GNC interacts with blood pressure medications and a few other drug categories.
The most serious concern is with antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications) — theanine can lower blood pressure on its own, and adding it to your blood pressure medication might drop it too far.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Theanine may also have minor additive effects with CNS depressants (drugs that calm the nervous system, like sleep aids or sedatives), though we're not certain this is a real problem in practice. There's also a minor theoretical concern with serotonergic drugs (medications that work on serotonin, including some antidepressants), but clinical reports of actual serotonin-related side effects from theanine are absent.
Although no interactions are documented beyond these, it's important to run your exact medications through the search tool on this page before you start. Altogether, these interactions span 565 individual medications.

L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
