Key points

  • L-theanine, when combined with medications like Celexa and Buspar, may increase the risk of serotonin-like effects.
  • Discussing your symptoms and concerns with your doctor is crucial for safe and effective management of anxiety and sleep disturbances, as they can evaluate your situation and provide guidance on the best course of action.

Quick Answer

L-theanine, an amino acid popularly utilized as a dietary supplement, has been reported in some studies to have mild serotonergic effects. When combined with medications like Celexa and Buspar, which also affect serotonin levels, it may increase the risk of serotonin-like effects.

It is important to discuss your symptoms and concerns with your doctor so you can be properly evaluated.

Detailed Answer

L-theanine, an amino acid found in green tea, has been historically used in dietary supplements as a relaxing agent and for its purported antidepressant effects.

Animal studies suggest that L-theanine may affect several neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine, and GABA. It also may interact with various receptors in the brain, such as AMPA, Kainate, and NMDA receptors. Human studies have also found similar effects.

For example, one randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial in humans examined the effects of four weeks of L-theanine administration on stress-related symptoms and cognitive functions. The study found that L-theanine supplementation (200 mg/day) led to a reduction in stress-related symptoms, including depression and anxiety scores.

When combined with medications like Celexa (citalopram) and Buspar (buspirone), which also modulate serotonin levels, there is a potential for interactions and exacerbation of serotonin-related symptoms.

Considering your experiences of restless sleep, vivid dreams, and increased anxiety the next morning, the use of L-theanine may be contributing to these effects.

One of the well-known risks of combining multiple serotonergic agents is the risk of the rare, but serious, condition known as serotonin syndrome.

Serotonin syndrome is characterized by an excess of serotonin in the brain, which can lead to symptoms such as agitation, anxiety, sweating, confusion, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, dilated pupils, and in severe cases, even seizures or coma.

It's challenging to definitively determine the cause of the issues you are experiencing (restless sleep, vivid dreams, and anxiety) without more information. However, considering the potential concern with your medications (Celexa and Buspar affecting serotonin levels) and adding L-theanine on top of it, it's worth discussing your symptoms and concerns with your doctor.

They will be able to evaluate your specific situation, consider the medications you are taking, and provide guidance on the best course of action.
