Alpha-alanine Alanine, a non-essential amino acid, has two forms: L-alpha-alanine and D-alpha-alanine. L-alpha-alanine is vital in protein synthesis and gluconeogenesis, sourced from diet, amino acid conversion, and glucose metabolism. It stimulates glucagon secretion, raising blood glucose levels in type 1 diabetes without affecting C-peptide or insulin. Conversely, in non-diabetics, it balances glucose levels. Animal studies suggest L-alpha-alanine may improve glutathione levels, enhance electrolyte absorption, reduce ketosis after exertion, and impact glycogen storage disease type II. D-alpha-alanine is explored for neurological effects, acting as an NMDA receptor agonist.
