Arrowroot Arrowroot is a starch that is extracted from the roots of several different plants, including Maranta arundinacea, which is native to South America. It is often used as a thickening agent in cooking as well as in the production of certain types of food and cosmetics. Arrowroot is relatively easy to digest and is considered to be a good source of nutrients, including B vitamins, potassium, and calcium. In traditional medicine, it is most often used for helping treat the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal disorders.
