Interaction Summary

Concomitant administration of amiodarone or other CYP2C9 inhibitors (such as fluconazole) with carvedilol may increase the beta-blocking activity and result in additional slowing of heart rate or cardiac conduction. Amiodarone and its metabolite (inhibitors of CYP2C9 and P-glycoprotein) increased concentrations of the S(-)-enantiomer of carvedilol by at least 2-fold. Observe patients for signs of bradycardia or heart block, especially when adding one agent to preexisting treatment with the other[1].

How To Manage Interaction

Concomitant administration of amiodarone or other CYP2C9 inhibitors (eg, fluconazole) with carvedilol may increase the beta-blocking activity and result in additional slowing of heart rate or cardiac conduction. Carvedilol Overview

  • Carvedilol is used to treat heart failure (condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood to all parts of the body) and high blood pressure. It also is used to treat people who have had a heart attack. Carvedilol is often used in combination with other medications. Carvedilol is in a class of medications called beta-blockers. It works by relaxing blood vessels and slowing heart rate to improve blood flow and decrease blood pressure
