Interaction Effect

An increased risk of CNS depression and clinically significant respiratory depression, obtundation, hypotension, profound sedation, syncope, and death


Interaction Summary

Concomitant use of sodium oxybate or mixed oxybate salts and other CNS depressants increases the risk for additive CNS depression and clinically significant respiratory depression, obtundation, hypotension, profound sedation, syncope, and death. If use of these CNS depressants in combination with an oxybate is required, dose reduction or discontinuation of one or more CNS depressant(s) (including oxybates) should be considered. In addition, if short-term use of an opioid (e.g., post-or perioperative) is required, interruption of treatment with the oxybate should be considered. If concomitant use is necessary, monitor for mental status changes and respiratory depression and manage cautiously and strongly consider prescribing naloxone for the emergency treatment of opioid overdose .

How To Manage Interaction

Methadone Overview

  • Methadone is used to relieve severe pain in people who are expected to need pain medication around the clock for a long time and who cannot be treated with other medications. It also is used to prevent withdrawal symptoms in patients who were addicted to opiate drugs and are enrolled in treatment programs in order to stop taking or continue not taking the drugs. Methadone is in a class of medications called opiate (narcotic) analgesics. Methadone works to treat pain by changing the way the brain and nervous system respond to pain. It works to treat people who were addicted to opiate drugs by producing similar effects and preventing withdrawal symptoms in people who have stopped using these drugs.

Sodium Oxybate Overview

  • Sodium oxybate is used to prevent attacks of cataplexy (episodes of muscle weakness that begin suddenly and last for a short time) and excessive daytime sleepiness in adults and children 7 years of age and older who have narcolepsy (a sleep disorder that may cause extreme sleepiness, sudden uncontrollable urge to sleep during daily activities, and cataplexy). Sodium oxybate is in a class of medications called central nervous system depressants. Sodium oxybate works to treat narcolepsy and cataplexy by reducing activity in the brain.
