Theoretically, Bulbine natalensis stem might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Bulbine natalensis stem extract induces CYP2C9 mRNA expression and enzyme activity. Theoretically, this may increase the metabolism of CYP2C9 substrates; however, this has not been studied in humans.

Here's the gist for rabeprazole (Pariet): this acid-reducing medicine is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Lab studies suggest Bulbine natalensis may speed that enzyme up. If it does, your body could break rabeprazole down a little faster, which in theory might leave less of it working. That could mean your heartburn or reflux symptoms aren't controlled as well as usual.

I want to be honest, though: this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so the real-world effect is uncertain and may be small or none at all. Rabeprazole isn't a high-risk drug here. Given the separate worries about this supplement and the liver, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the gist of this one. Rabeprazole, your acid reducer, is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab tests (not in people), Bulbine natalensis seemed to speed that enzyme up. If that were to happen in your body, it could push rabeprazole out faster, which might leave you with less heartburn and acid control than you expect. You could notice symptoms creeping back, like burning in the chest or a sour stomach.

The good news: this is only a theoretical, test-tube finding, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Rabeprazole is not a prodrug, so it doesn't get more potent here. Still, given Bulbine's possible liver and kidney concerns, please run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Rabeprazole

What Is Rabeprazole Used For?

Brand name: Pariet

Rabeprazole delayed-release tablets treat a range of acid-related conditions in adults, including healing and maintenance of erosive or ulcerative GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), symptomatic GERD, duodenal ulcers, and pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. They are also used alongside antibiotics (amoxicillin and clarithromycin) to eradicate H. pylori bacteria and reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer coming back.

In adolescents 12 years and older, rabeprazole delayed-release tablets are approved for short-term treatment of symptomatic GERD. Both AcipHex and Rabeprazole Sodium delayed-release tablets share this indication set for adults and adolescents 12 and older.
