VENLAFAXINE (Effexor)

Theoretically, celery root extract might increase blood levels of venlafaxine.
There is one case report of a patient who experienced medication-induced bipolar disorder after beginning to take celery root extract 1000 mg daily along with venlafaxine 75 mg and St. John's wort 600 mg daily. Symptoms included confusion, speech abnormalities, manic affect, and visual hallucinations. The plasma level of venlafaxine was 476.8 ng/mL (normal range 195-400 ng/mL). It is theorized that celery root increased venlafaxine levels by inhibiting cytochrome P450 2D6.

Here's the basic idea with celery seed or root extract and venlafaxine. Your body clears venlafaxine partly through a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Compounds in concentrated celery extract may slow that enzyme down, which means more of the drug can hang around in your blood. Since venlafaxine isn't a prodrug, more drug simply means a stronger effect, and that can show up as higher blood pressure, a racing heart, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or feeling unusually wired.

I want to be honest about how shaky this evidence is: it rests on a single case report (where St. John's wort was also involved), so it's really theoretical. Eating celery as a food is very unlikely to matter. If you're considering a concentrated celery supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Venlafaxine is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) across all available formulations. Extended-release capsules (including Effexor XR) are also approved for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic disorder (PD).

Extended-release tablets are approved for major depressive disorder and social anxiety disorder. Immediate-release venlafaxine tablets are indicated for major depressive disorder only.
