No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Methylsulfonylmethane (msm) and Isotretinoin in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Methylsulfonylmethane (msm) and Isotretinoin

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Isotretinoin and Methylsulfonylmethane (msm) in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Methylsulfonylmethane (msm) at all — not against Isotretinoin, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Methylsulfonylmethane (msm) and Isotretinoin May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

Reported for Methylsulfonylmethane (msm) but not commonly for Isotretinoin: stomach upset, trouble concentrating and bloating or gas.

Effects for Isotretinoin come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Methylsulfonylmethane (msm) come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 46,523 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Isotretinoin that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

This page covers Methylsulfonylmethane (msm) only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Isotretinoin page lists 49 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Isotretinoin page

“Vitamin A is the first thing anyone on isotretinoin (Accutane, Absorica, Claravis) should check their supplements for, because isotretinoin is itself a vitamin A derivative and stacking more on top can push levels into toxic range. It is one of two major-rated entries among the 49 supplements and herbs known to interact with this acne…”

About Isotretinoin

What Is Isotretinoin Used For?

Brand names: Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, Sotret, Absorica, Roaccutane

Isotretinoin capsules — sold under brand names including Absorica, Absorica LD, Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, and others — are indicated for the treatment of severe recalcitrant nodular acne in non-pregnant patients 12 years of age and older. This means deep, inflamed acne nodules (5 mm or larger) that have not cleared with conventional treatments, including systemic antibiotics.

This medication is reserved for the most severe cases because of its significant potential side effects. It is not used for mild or moderate acne. Absorica and Absorica LD are two distinct products that are not interchangeable with each other on a milligram-per-milligram basis due to differences in bioavailability and recommended dosing.
