What Severity, Likelihood & Evidence Mean

Severity — How Serious It Can Be

  • Major. Clinically significant; generally best avoided, or used only under direct professional supervision.
  • Moderate. May need monitoring, a dose adjustment, or separating the times you take each one.
  • Minor. Generally not clinically significant, but still worth noting and mentioning to your pharmacist.
  • No known interaction. Checked against our sources with nothing documented — not the same as proven safety.

Likelihood — How Well It’s Documented

  • Likely. Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction
  • Probable. Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • Possible. Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists
  • Unlikely. Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

Where This Data Comes From

  • Interaction records are evidence-graded and sourced from the Natural Medicines database (TRC Healthcare), the same reference used by pharmacists and hospitals.

Overview

Catuaba is a popular herbal remedy that comes from the bark of certain trees and shrubs native to the rainforests of Brazil. The name "catuaba" is actually used for more than one plant, so products labeled catuaba may not all contain the same species. This makes it hard to know exactly what is in any given supplement.

In traditional Brazilian folk medicine, catuaba bark has long been brewed into teas and tonics and is most famous as an aphrodisiac, meaning something used to boost sexual desire. People also take it as a general pick-me-up for energy, stamina, and mood.

Today catuaba is sold around the world as capsules, teas, powders, and liquid extracts, often combined with other herbs such as muira puama in "male performance" or "energy" blends.

Uses & effectiveness

Catuaba is mostly used for sexual concerns such as low libido and erectile difficulties, as well as for energy, stamina, and mood. These uses come from traditional practice, not from strong scientific proof.

The honest summary is that high-quality human studies on catuaba are essentially lacking. Most of what is claimed about it comes from traditional use, marketing, or early laboratory and animal research. This kind of research cannot tell us whether catuaba is safe or effective in people.

Because the evidence is so limited, catuaba should not be relied on to treat any medical condition. If you have ongoing problems such as erectile dysfunction, low energy, or low mood, these can have important underlying causes that deserve a proper medical evaluation.

How it works

Catuaba bark contains a mix of plant compounds, which may include alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and other natural chemicals. Some researchers have suggested these compounds might affect blood flow, the nervous system, or brain signaling chemicals like dopamine.

It is important to understand that these ideas come mostly from laboratory and animal studies. We do not have good evidence showing how (or whether) catuaba produces real effects in the human body.

Because different plants are sold under the catuaba name, the active compounds can vary from product to product. This adds to the uncertainty about how it works.

Safety & precautions

The overall safety of catuaba in humans is not well studied. Traditional use suggests it is reasonably tolerated as a tea, but this is not the same as proof of safety, especially for concentrated supplements taken over time.

People who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid catuaba because there is no reliable safety information for these situations. Children should not use it. People with serious health conditions, those taking prescription medicines, and older adults should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

Because supplements are not tightly regulated, catuaba products may be mislabeled, contain other herbs, or be contaminated. Choose products from reputable companies that use third-party testing when possible.

Side effects

Reported side effects of catuaba are not well documented because of the lack of careful studies. As with many herbal products, possible effects could include stomach upset, nausea, headache, or restlessness, particularly at higher doses.

Allergic reactions are always possible with plant products. Stop using catuaba and seek medical care if you notice a rash, swelling, trouble breathing, or other signs of a serious reaction.

If you notice any unexpected or troubling symptom after taking catuaba, stop and talk with your pharmacist or doctor.

Dosing

There is no established, standardized dose for catuaba. Because the species and strength of products vary, there is no reliable "correct" amount that research supports.

If you choose to use catuaba, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed the recommended amount. Starting low is sensible. A pharmacist can help you review the specific product you are considering and check whether it is a good fit for you.
