What Severity, Likelihood & Evidence Mean

Severity — How Serious It Can Be

  • Major. Clinically significant; generally best avoided, or used only under direct professional supervision.
  • Moderate. May need monitoring, a dose adjustment, or separating the times you take each one.
  • Minor. Generally not clinically significant, but still worth noting and mentioning to your pharmacist.
  • No known interaction. Checked against our sources with nothing documented — not the same as proven safety.

Likelihood — How Well It’s Documented

  • Likely. Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction
  • Probable. Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • Possible. Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists
  • Unlikely. Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

Where This Data Comes From

  • Interaction records are evidence-graded and sourced from the Natural Medicines database (TRC Healthcare), the same reference used by pharmacists and hospitals.

Mentabolan: Uses, Safety & Side Effects

The bottom line

Mentabolan is a marketing name for a synthetic steroid-like compound (often linked to dimethandrostenediol/prohormone chemicals) sold in some bodybuilding 'prohormone' products, not a natural herb. These designer steroid products can be unsafe, may be illegal or unapproved, and have been associated with liver and hormonal harm, so we strongly recommend avoiding them and talking with a doctor or pharmacist.

Overview

Mentabolan is not an herb or a plant. It is a brand or marketing name used for a synthetic, steroid-like chemical sold in some 'prohormone' or 'anabolic' bodybuilding supplements. Products with this name have been associated with compounds related to designer anabolic steroids, sometimes described by chemical names like dimethandrostenediol.

These products are usually sold online or in supplement shops and are marketed to people who want to build muscle, gain strength, or change their body shape quickly. Despite being sold as 'supplements,' compounds like this act more like drugs than like food or vitamins.

It is important to know that ingredients in these products are often poorly labeled, change over time, and may not match what is on the bottle. Many such designer steroid products have been the target of warnings and recalls by health authorities.

How it works

Mentabolan-type compounds are thought to act like anabolic steroids or steroid precursors (prohormones). The idea is that the body converts the compound, or that it directly stimulates androgen (male hormone) receptors, which can promote muscle growth.

Because it may behave like a hormone, it can also disrupt the body's natural hormone balance. This is the same mechanism behind many of its side effects, such as suppressing the body's own testosterone production.

Most of what is 'known' about these mechanisms comes from comparisons to other anabolic steroids rather than from direct, careful study of this specific product.

Safety & precautions

We recommend avoiding Mentabolan. Designer steroid and prohormone products have been linked to serious problems, including liver damage, hormonal imbalance, and heart and blood pressure issues. Some have been pulled from the market by regulators.

People with liver disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, hormone-sensitive conditions, or a history of mood disorders are at especially high risk. These products should never be used by teenagers or young adults whose bodies are still developing.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Avoid completely. Hormone-altering steroid compounds can harm a developing baby and may pass into breast milk. There is no safe known use during these times.

Athletes should also note that these substances are typically banned in tested sports and can cause a failed drug test.

Side effects

Reported and expected side effects of anabolic/prohormone products like this include:

  • Liver injury, sometimes serious, including jaundice (yellow skin or eyes)
  • Suppressed natural testosterone and other hormone changes
  • Acne, oily skin, and hair loss
  • Mood changes, irritability, or aggression
  • High blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol changes
  • In some people, breast tissue growth (men) or menstrual and voice changes (women)

Rare but serious harms can include heart problems and significant liver toxicity. Any yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe abdominal pain, or chest pain needs urgent medical care.

Dosing

There is no established, safe, or medically recommended dose for Mentabolan. It is not an approved medication or a tested supplement, and product labels may be inaccurate.

Because of the serious safety concerns, we do not recommend using it at any dose. If you are considering it or already taking it, please speak with a doctor or pharmacist before continuing.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Mentabolan & Pregnancy

Possibly Unsafe

When used orally. Prohormones can be converted to active hormones in the body and cause adverse effects such as menstrual irregularities, infertility, hair loss, and acne. Prohormones have also been associated with hepatotoxicity and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other regulatory agencies warn that dietary supplements containing prohormones are dangerous. Avoid using.

Mentabolan: Common Questions

What is Mentabolan used for, and does it work?
People use Mentabolan for a range of reasons, but according to the Natural Medicines database the current clinical evidence is insufficient to confirm it works for the specific conditions it has been studied for. See the graded list on this page, and talk to your pharmacist or doctor before relying on it for any condition.
Does Mentabolan interact with prescription medications?
We do not currently list any known drug interactions for Mentabolan. This does not guarantee that none exist, so always confirm with your pharmacist before combining it with your medications.
How are Mentabolan interactions rated?
Each interaction is graded major, moderate, or minor based on how clinically significant it is and the strength of the evidence behind it. Major interactions are the most serious and are best avoided, or used only under close professional supervision.
Is it safe to take Mentabolan with my medications?
It depends on the specific medication. Some combinations are fine, while others call for monitoring, timing changes, or should be avoided. Check your exact drug above and confirm with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, stopping, or changing anything.
Where does this Mentabolan interaction information come from?
Our interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database — an evidence-graded reference for vitamins, herbs, and supplements — and is reviewed by licensed HelloPharmacist pharmacists, who may add clinical context.
Is Mentabolan a natural herb?
No. Despite being sold as a 'supplement,' it is a synthetic, steroid-like compound (a prohormone), not a plant or herbal product.
Is Mentabolan safe to take?
We do not consider it safe. Designer steroid products like this have been linked to liver damage, hormone disruption, and heart problems, and they lack proper safety testing.
Will Mentabolan help me build muscle?
It is marketed for muscle and strength gains, but there is no reliable human research proving it works safely, and the risks are significant.
Can I take Mentabolan if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. Hormone-altering steroid compounds should be completely avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding because they can harm the baby.
