Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: 7-keto DHEA, a compound related to the hormone DHEA that your body naturally produces. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients (microcrystalline cellulose, gelatin, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide) that help hold the supplement together.

Does it work?

Not established
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see 7-keto-dhea's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: metabolism and body composition support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Obesity, Aging, Athletic performance, Muscle strength, weight management, fat loss — and 2 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: 7-keto-dhea is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Aging skin (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: 7-keto-dhea is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Athletic performance, Muscle strength, Obesity, Aging.

The evidence for 7-keto DHEA is still being worked out. For obesity, depression, PTSD, Raynaud syndrome, and aging, we don't yet have enough reliable data to say whether it works.

That doesn't mean it's ineffective—just that the research so far hasn't been strong enough to draw firm conclusions.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Short-term use appears generally well tolerated in small studies, but long-term safety hasn't been established, so we don't know what happens if you take it for months or years. A few people in trials reported nausea or dizziness.

There's also one case report of lower blood cell counts (hemoglobin and hematocrit) in someone taking 50 mg daily for a week, though the clinical meaning of that isn't entirely clear. 7-keto DHEA should be avoided during pregnancy because there isn't enough safety data, and hormone-related supplements are best steered clear of when you're carrying.

It should also be avoided while breastfeeding due to lack of reliable safety information.

7-Keto 25 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe: Common Questions

Does 7-Keto 25 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in 7-Keto 25 mg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
7-Keto 25 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this while I'm pregnant?

Is it safe to breastfeed while taking 7-keto DHEA?
There isn't enough reliable safety information available, so it's best avoided while breastfeeding. Ask your pharmacist or doctor if you have questions about what you can safely take while nursing.
What are the side effects?
In small studies, a couple of people reported nausea or dizziness. There's also one case report of lower blood cell counts (hemoglobin and hematocrit) in someone taking a higher dose for a week, though we're not sure how significant that is. Short-term use appears generally well tolerated, but long-term safety isn't well established.
Does 7-keto DHEA actually help with weight loss?
The evidence so far isn't strong enough to say for sure. We don't have enough reliable data yet to know whether it works for obesity.
How long can I safely take this?
We know short-term use appears generally well tolerated in small studies, but long-term safety hasn't been established. If you're thinking of taking it for months on end, it's worth checking in with your pharmacist first.
