This product contains one active ingredient: benfotiamine, a fat-soluble form of thiamine (vitamin B1) that your body may absorb differently than regular thiamine supplements. The capsule also contains acacia gum as an inactive ingredient.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Benfotiamine is possibly effective for diabetic nerve pain (diabetic neuropathy). For diabetic kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy), the evidence suggests it's probably not effective.
For alcohol-related conditions, Alzheimer's disease, and general nerve pain not tied to diabetes, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Benfotiamine is generally well tolerated in the studies we have, but long-term safety hasn't been fully worked out. In one 6-week trial of 98 people taking 300–600 mg daily, a small number reported allergic skin reactions and mild stomach discomfort — but these occurred at the same rate as placebo, so they weren't clearly caused by the supplement.
There isn't enough safety information to recommend it in pregnancy, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Safety while breastfeeding hasn't been well studied either, so caution is advised.
