Well-documented data
Benzoin is generally used topically and considered low-risk when applied to skin, but it can cause contact dermatitis and other skin reactions — in clinical trials, localized contact dermatitis occurred in about 8 to 9 percent of people using compound benzoin tincture. Allergic reactions and skin discoloration have also been reported.
If you swallow it by mistake, it may cause stomach irritation (gastritis) or even gastrointestinal bleeding. Stick to topical use only and stop if you notice a rash or irritation.
Safety during breastfeeding hasn't been well studied — check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're nursing.
