What’s inside

Full disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Full

Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: CarnoSyn, a branded form of beta-alanine. Beta-alanine is an amino acid your body uses to make carnosine, a compound involved in muscle function and endurance.

The powder form lets you mix it into water or a beverage for easy dosing.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: endurance and muscular endurance, delays muscle fatigue.
  • We looked for evidence on: Athletic performance, Physical performance, Exercise-induced muscle breakdown, muscle fatigue, high-intensity exercise capacity.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Beta-alanine is rated "Possibly Effective" for Athletic performance (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Beta-alanine is rated "Possibly Effective" for Physical performance.
  • Also on file: Beta-alanine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Exercise-induced muscle breakdown.

Beta-alanine is rated possibly effective for athletic performance and physical performance — meaning there's some evidence it may help, but it's not yet conclusive. For age-related cognitive decline, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), general cognitive function, and menopausal symptoms, the evidence isn't established in our data.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Beta-alanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effect is a harmless tingling sensation (paresthesia) and skin flushing, usually starting on the scalp within about 20 minutes and spreading across the body for roughly an hour.

How intense this is depends on the dose — it's very mild at lower doses and affects only some people. The product hasn't been studied for long-term use at high doses, so caution is warranted there.

Because there isn't enough safety information, it's best to avoid beta-alanine during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're in either situation.

CarnoSyn Carnitine Synthesizer

Beta-Alanine is a non-essential amino acid that is used by muscle cells to synthesize carnosine. Carnosine is a dipeptide (Beta-Alanine plus Histidine) that functions as a buffer for the hydrogen ions (acid) produced during strenuous exercise, thus helping to maintain optimum muscular pH. NOW Sports uses CarnoSyn, a patented form of Beta-Alanine that has been clinically tested and shown to increase muscle carnosine content, allowing muscles to work harder and longer during intense exercise. NOW Sports Beta-Alanine is backed by scientific research demonstrating that CarnoSyn supplementation results in delayed muscle fatigue and rapid recovery time, thereby helping you attain your strength and endurance training goals.
