Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin your body needs to convert food into energy and maintain healthy skin, hair, and nails. The capsule also holds several inactive ingredients — vegetable cellulose (the capsule itself), magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, and microcrystalline cellulose — which are fillers and binders that help hold the supplement together.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Biotin's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: hair, skin and nail health support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Alopecia areata, Brittle nails, Seborrheic dermatitis, hair loss, nail strength, skin condition.
  • The closest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Seborrheic dermatitis (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Alopecia areata, Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for biotin deficiency, which can occur when your diet doesn't provide enough of this vitamin or when certain medical conditions or medications deplete your stores. For other uses — multiple sclerosis, seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly, itchy scalp condition), and hair loss (alopecia areata) — the evidence is weaker.

Biotin is possibly ineffective for MS and seborrheic dermatitis, and there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it for alopecia areata.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body excretes what it doesn't use through urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been associated with mild diarrhea; in one trial, 2 patients taking 300 mg daily experienced transient mild diarrhea.

One case report described a 76-year-old woman who developed a type of inflammation (eosinophilic pleuropericarditis) after taking biotin 10 mg and pantothenic acid 300 mg daily for 2 months along with another medication, but whether biotin was the cause, or one of several factors, isn't clear — no other similar reports exist. Because this is a high-dose product, talk with your doctor before starting it.
