What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin your body uses to process amino acids and glucose for energy and healthy skin and hair. It comes as a 1000 microgram tablet.
The inactive ingredients are dicalcium phosphate, cellulose, silica, magnesium stearate, croscarmellose sodium, and cellulose coating — these are fillers, binders, and the tablet coating.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Biotin is likely effective for biotin deficiency, which can cause hair loss, skin rashes, and nail problems. For multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly, itchy scalp condition), the evidence suggests it's probably not effective.
For alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body flushes excess in the urine. High-dose biotin has rarely caused mild diarrhea — a small number of patients taking 300 mg daily experienced this.
One case report linked a very high dose (10 mg daily) combined with pantothenic acid to a rare heart and lung inflammation, but it's unclear whether biotin was the cause, and no other similar cases have been reported. Food and prenatal vitamin amounts are appropriate, but talk with your doctor before taking high-dose biotin supplements.
