What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin your body needs to convert food into energy and maintain healthy hair, skin, and nails. You get 300 micrograms per tablet.
The tablet also contains inactive ingredients (fillers and binders) including calcium phosphate, vegetable cellulose, vegetable stearic acid, silica, and vegetable magnesium stearate — standard materials that help hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Biotin is likely effective for treating biotin deficiency, which is rare but can happen if you have certain digestive disorders or take specific medications long-term. For other uses — multiple sclerosis, seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly skin condition), and hair loss — the evidence we hold doesn't show it works.
For alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), there isn't enough reliable evidence to say one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body removes excess through urine. At very high doses, mild diarrhea has been reported rarely — in one trial, two people taking biotin 300 mg daily (1,000 times this dose) had transient mild diarrhea.
One isolated case report linked high-dose biotin with a rare inflammatory condition, but it's unclear whether biotin was the cause. Biotin from food and prenatal vitamins is considered likely safe in pregnancy and lactation.
If you're pregnant, nursing, or planning to be, or if you're considering high-dose biotin supplements, talk with your doctor first.
