Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin essential for the breakdown of fats, carbohydrates, and amino acids. Each capsule delivers 5,000 micrograms — a high dose well above what you'd get from food alone.

The inactive ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, water, and silicon dioxide, which make up the capsule and help it dissolve.

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: biotin supplementation.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biotin deficiency, Brittle nails, hair health, skin health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for treating biotin deficiency, a rare condition. For other uses — multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis (a flaky scalp condition) — the evidence suggests it's probably not effective.

For alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), we don't yet have enough reliable evidence to rate it one way or the other.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, and excess amounts are simply removed through your urine. High-dose biotin has rarely caused mild diarrhea.

One unusual case report described severe inflammation of the heart and lung lining in an older person taking 10 mg of biotin daily along with other supplements and medications, but it's unclear whether biotin was responsible, and no similar cases have been reported since. Normal dietary amounts and prenatal vitamins that contain biotin are fine, but if you're considering a high-dose product like this one, talk it over with your doctor first.

No interactions are documented in our data for biotin. You're clear to combine it with medications without concern for drug interactions.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

If you have confirmed biotin deficiency, this supplement can help. For hair, skin, or neurological concerns, the evidence doesn't support biotin as effective.

Because it's a high-dose product, check with your doctor or pharmacist before you start — especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other supplements.

Biotin 5,000 mcg by Klaire Labs: Common Questions

Does Biotin 5,000 mcg by Klaire Labs interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Biotin 5,000 mcg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Biotin 5,000 mcg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will biotin help my hair grow or stop hair loss?
Biotin is often marketed for hair health, but the evidence doesn't support it for alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), and we don't have enough reliable data to know either way for other types of hair loss. If hair loss is a concern, talk with your doctor about what's actually driving it — that'll point you toward treatments that work.
Is it safe to take this much biotin?
Biotin is generally well tolerated at high doses because your body excretes excess in your urine. Mild diarrhea is rare. Still, because this is a 5,000 mcg dose — much higher than food provides — check with your doctor before starting, especially if you're pregnant or breastfeeding or already taking biotin supplements.
Can I take biotin if I'm pregnant or nursing?
Biotin is rated likely safe during pregnancy and lactation. Normal dietary amounts and prenatal vitamins containing biotin are appropriate, but if you're considering a high-dose supplement like this one, discuss it with your doctor first to make sure it's right for you.
Does biotin interfere with any medications?
No interactions are documented in our data. Biotin doesn't change how your medications work, so it's safe to combine with prescriptions from that standpoint — but always double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you have other health concerns.
What is biotin and what does it do?
Biotin is a B vitamin that helps your body break down and use fats, carbohydrates, and amino acids. It's found in small amounts in foods like eggs, nuts, and fish, but this supplement delivers a much higher dose.
Can high-dose biotin cause side effects?
Side effects are rare. Mild diarrhea has been reported in a small number of people taking very high doses. One unusual case reported severe inflammation of the heart and lung lining in an older person taking 10 mg daily along with other supplements, but whether biotin was to blame is unclear.
