Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin your body uses to help metabolize carbohydrates, fats, and amino acids. The inactive ingredients are cellulose, a vegan capsule, magnesium stearate, and silica — these are fillers and binders that hold the capsule together.

Does it work?

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: support healthy hair, skin and nails.
  • We looked for evidence on: Brittle nails, Biotin deficiency, hair loss, nail health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for biotin deficiency — the most straightforward use. For other conditions, the evidence is thinner: it's rated possibly ineffective for multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis (a flaky, inflamed scalp condition).

For hair loss (alopecia areata), there isn't enough reliable evidence to say either way.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body gets rid of excess through urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea.

One isolated case report described a severe allergic-type reaction (eosinophilic pleuropericarditis) in a woman taking biotin 10 mg daily with other supplements and medications, but whether biotin caused it is unclear — no other cases like that have been reported. During pregnancy and lactation, normal dietary amounts and amounts from prenatal vitamins are considered likely safe, but talk with your doctor before taking high-dose supplements like this one.

Meds to double-check

No known interactions
Known Interaction Concern · database check
No known interactions

No medication interactions are currently documented for the matched ingredients — that isn't a guarantee none exist.

Why this rating?
  • None of the 1 matched ingredient has a documented medication interaction on file.

No interactions are documented for biotin in our data. That doesn't mean they can't occur in real life, so mention this product to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you take multiple medications or have had unusual reactions to supplements before.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

If you have a documented biotin deficiency, this is likely to help. If you're taking it for hair loss or scalp inflammation, the evidence doesn't support it.

Because this is a high-dose supplement, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other supplements or medications.

Formula

High potency biotin for optimal beauty support Biotin, a B vitamin long used to aid in metabolism and support healthy hair, skin and nails, has recently been discovered to be beneficial for blood glucose already within normal range. Recent research has shown that biotin, when used in high doses such as the amount found in Biotin 5,000 mcg, can help promote glucose uptake in muscle tissue. It can also help to potentiate the glucose supporting properties of the mineral chromium picolinate.

Biotin 5,000 mcg by Woodstock Vitamins: Common Questions

Does Biotin 5,000 mcg by Woodstock Vitamins interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Biotin 5,000 mcg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Biotin 5,000 mcg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will biotin help my hair grow or stop hair loss?
There isn't enough reliable evidence to say biotin works for alopecia areata or other hair-loss conditions. If that's why you're considering it, talk with your doctor about whether it's worth trying for you.
Is this safe to take while pregnant?
Normal dietary amounts and prenatal vitamin amounts are considered likely safe. But 5,000 mcg is a high dose, so check with your doctor before taking it during pregnancy.
What's the difference between biotin deficiency and just wanting better hair or skin?
Biotin deficiency is a real condition where your body lacks enough B vitamin to work properly — biotin is likely effective for that. Taking extra when you don't have a deficiency is different; the evidence for skin, hair, or nails is weak.
Can high-dose biotin cause side effects?
It's rare, but mild diarrhea has been reported at very high doses. One isolated case of a severe allergic-type reaction was reported, but it's unclear whether biotin caused it — no other cases like that have happened since.
Is this product just biotin, or does it have other active ingredients?
Just biotin — one active ingredient at 5,000 mcg. The rest is inactive ingredients like cellulose and magnesium stearate, which are fillers and binders.
