What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin your body needs to break down and use carbohydrates, fats, and amino acids. You get some biotin from food — eggs, almonds, sweet potatoes — but this liquid supplement delivers 5,000 mcg per serving for people whose dietary intake falls short or who have a diagnosed biotin deficiency.
The rest of the bottle is inactive ingredients: water, glycerin, xylitol, natural flavoring, citric acid, potassium sorbate (a preservative), stevia leaf extract, and xanthan gum.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Biotin is likely effective for treating biotin deficiency — a clinical shortage of the vitamin in your body. For other uses, the evidence is weaker: it's rated possibly ineffective for multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly skin rash), and there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it helps alopecia areata (patchy hair loss).
If you're taking this for any reason other than a confirmed deficiency, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the evidence supports it for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at high doses, because your body eliminates excess in the urine. The most common side effect at high doses is mild diarrhea — rarely reported, and usually transient.
One case report describes a patient who developed inflammation of the tissue around the heart and lungs while taking high-dose biotin along with several other supplements and a heart medication, but it's unclear which substance (if any) was responsible, and no similar cases have been reported since. Food-level and prenatal vitamin amounts of biotin are safe; if you're taking a high-dose supplement like this one, check with your doctor first.
