Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin your body needs to convert food into energy and maintain healthy hair, skin, and nails. At 5000 mcg per tablet, this is a high-dose supplement — much more than you'd get from food alone.

The tablet also contains two inactive ingredients (lactose and acacia gum), which are fillers and binders that help hold the tablet together.

Does it work?

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Biotin supplementation for hair, skin, and nails.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biotin deficiency, Brittle nails, Hair loss, Alopecia, Skin health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Alopecia areata, Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for treating biotin deficiency — a genuine shortage of this vitamin in your body. If that's why you're taking it, there's solid evidence behind it.

For other uses listed here — multiple sclerosis, seborrheic dermatitis (a flaky scalp condition), and hair loss — the evidence doesn't support it. Two conditions show possibly ineffective ratings, and for alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), we don't have enough reliable evidence to say either way.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at high doses, because your body excretes excess amounts in urine. High-dose biotin has rarely caused mild diarrhea; one documented case involved a patient taking 300 mg daily.

There's also one isolated case report of a 76-year-old who developed a rare inflammation of the lining around the heart after taking 10 mg biotin (plus other supplements and medications), but whether biotin was responsible is unclear and no similar cases have been reported since. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, biotin is rated likely safe.

The caution here is about high-dose supplements — amounts from food and prenatal vitamins are fine, but talk to your doctor before taking a 5000 mcg supplement if you're pregnant or nursing.

Biotin 5000 mcg Instant Dissolving by Trader Joe's: Common Questions

Does Biotin 5000 mcg Instant Dissolving by Trader Joe's interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Biotin 5000 mcg Instant Dissolving. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Biotin 5000 mcg Instant Dissolving contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this help my hair grow back or stop hair loss?
For alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), we don't have enough evidence to say whether biotin works. For general hair loss, the evidence doesn't support it. If hair loss is your concern, talk to your doctor about what might actually be causing it.
Is this safe to take if I'm pregnant?
Biotin is rated likely safe in pregnancy. The caution is about high-dose supplements like this one — amounts from food and prenatal vitamins are fine, but discuss taking a 5000 mcg supplement with your doctor first to be sure it's right for you.
Can biotin cause side effects?
High-dose biotin is generally very well tolerated. Mild diarrhea has been rarely reported at very high doses (300 mg daily — much more than this product). One isolated case of a serious inflammation around the heart was reported, but it's unclear whether biotin or other factors were responsible.
What is biotin actually for?
Biotin is a B vitamin that helps your body turn food into energy and supports healthy hair, skin, and nails. This product is likely effective if you have an actual biotin deficiency — a shortage your doctor can test for.
Why does the label say to check with my doctor about high-dose supplements?
At 5000 mcg, this is a high-dose product — much more than you'd get from eating or from a standard prenatal vitamin. Your doctor may want to make sure it's appropriate for your situation, especially if you have any health conditions or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
