Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin (also called vitamin B7) that your body uses to help process fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Each capsule delivers 8,000 micrograms — a high-dose form meant for people targeting biotin deficiency or other specific purposes.

The inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable cellulose, and magnesium stearate — are the capsule shell and binders that hold the tablet together.

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Hair, nail and skin support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biotin deficiency, Brittle nails, Hair loss, Skin quality, Nail strength.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for biotin deficiency, so if you're low in this vitamin, supplementing should help. For other uses — multiple sclerosis (MS), seborrheic dermatitis (a flaky, itchy scalp condition), or alopecia areata (patchy hair loss) — the evidence doesn't support benefit (possibly ineffective for MS and dermatitis) or is too limited to say either way (alopecia areata).

Talk with your doctor about whether this dose and form is right for your particular reason for considering it.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body excretes excess amounts in urine. In trials, high-dose biotin has rarely caused mild diarrhea — two people taking 300 mg daily reported brief loose stools.

One case report described a woman who developed inflammation in the membrane around the heart and lungs after taking biotin 10 mg plus other supplements, but it's unclear whether biotin was the culprit, and no similar reports have surfaced since. Because this is a high-dose supplement, check with your doctor before starting, especially if you're pregnant, nursing, or taking other supplements or medications.

Biotin HSN 8000 mcg by PureFormulas: Common Questions

Does Biotin HSN 8000 mcg by PureFormulas interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Biotin HSN 8000 mcg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Biotin HSN 8000 mcg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is biotin safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Biotin is rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation. Amounts from food and prenatal vitamins are appropriate. Because this is a high-dose supplement, check with your doctor before taking it — they can confirm it's right for your situation.
What is biotin, and what does it do?
Biotin is a B vitamin your body uses to process and metabolize fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. It's one of the B-complex vitamins your cells need for energy and healthy function.
Can biotin help with hair loss?
For alopecia areata, which causes patchy hair loss, the evidence on biotin isn't established enough to say whether it works. If hair loss is your concern, talk with your doctor about what's actually causing it and the best approach.
What side effects might I notice?
High-dose biotin is rarely associated with mild diarrhea. One older case report described a woman who developed inflammation around the heart and lungs, but it's unclear whether biotin was responsible, and no similar reports have occurred since. Most people tolerate it well.
Why is the dose in this product so high?
Biotin is water-soluble, so excess amounts are removed in your urine — your body doesn't store it. That means it's hard to overdose, but it also means you're relying on consistent intake. This 8000 mcg dose targets specific uses like biotin deficiency. Ask your doctor whether you need a dose this high.
