What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: black walnut powder (hulls and bark). Black walnut has been used traditionally for coronary heart disease and wound healing, though we don't yet have enough reliable evidence to rate how well it works for either purpose.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold isn't established for black walnut's use in coronary heart disease or wound healing—we rate both as having insufficient reliable evidence. That means the science so far hasn't proven the ingredient works for these uses, but it also hasn't ruled it out.
More research is needed.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Black walnut is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but the hulls and bark—which make up this product—contain high amounts of tannins and may cause gastrointestinal upset. Topically, hull preparations can stain skin temporarily yellow or brown and cause irritation.
Because black walnut is a tree nut, people with tree nut allergies should avoid it. Human safety data are limited and long-term use hasn't been well studied, so short-term use is what we know most about.
During pregnancy, the safety data advise against use. While breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information—talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.
Additionally, daily use of related walnut species containing juglone is linked to increased risk of tongue cancer and lip leukoplakia, so extended use warrants caution.
