Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: caralluma extract, a plant-derived compound. Caralluma is the whole of what you're getting here — there's one ingredient doing the work.

The liquid also contains vegetable palm glycerin and alcohol as inactive ingredients to deliver the extract.

Does it work?

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Caralluma's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: appetite suppression and weight management.
  • We looked for evidence on: Obesity, weight loss, appetite control, metabolic health.
  • The closest evidence on file: Caralluma is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Obesity (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for caralluma is mixed and mostly thin. For weight loss (obesity), the data suggests it's possibly ineffective — meaning the studies don't back up the idea that it helps.

For generalized anxiety disorder and Prader-Willi syndrome, there simply isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or not. The research on this ingredient is still developing, and we can't draw solid conclusions yet.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Caralluma is generally well tolerated in the short term based on clinical trial data. The most common side effects early on — abdominal bloating, constipation, gas, and stomach inflammation — tend to fade within the first two weeks and have also appeared in placebo groups.

One trial participant with a history of high blood pressure saw a temporary rise while taking it, but the increase went away and didn't come back. Long-term safety hasn't been well studied, so we don't have solid data on what happens if you take it for months or years.

The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe.

Caralluma by Hawaii Pharm: Common Questions

Does Caralluma by Hawaii Pharm interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Caralluma. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Caralluma contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What side effects might I see in the first few weeks?
The most common ones early on are bloating, constipation, gas, and stomach inflammation. The good news is these typically settle down within two weeks. Some of these also showed up in placebo groups in trials.
Does caralluma actually help with weight loss?
The evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective for obesity — meaning studies haven't shown it works for that purpose. If weight management is your goal, this probably isn't the ingredient to bank on.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. The safety data advises against it during pregnancy because there isn't enough information to know it's safe, and the same goes for breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor about what's right for you.
What happens if I take this long-term?
We don't have good long-term safety data. The studies show it's tolerated in the short run, but we don't know what happens over months or years of use. If you're thinking about taking it regularly, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Is there any evidence it helps with anxiety?
Not yet. For generalized anxiety disorder, there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works. The research just isn't there yet.
