Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: chitosan extract, a compound derived from shellfish shells that's been partially processed (95% de-acetylated) to increase its biological activity. Each capsule delivers 450 mg.

The capsule itself is made from gelatin and water—these are inert ingredients that hold and deliver the active compound.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Chitosan's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Chitosan for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Hypertension — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).
  • On file: Obesity — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).
  • On file: Postoperative recovery — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for chitosan is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for obesity and for blood pressure support, meaning some clinical research supports these uses but the evidence isn't yet strong enough to call it proven.

For postoperative recovery (healing after surgery), it's also rated possibly effective. However, for Crohn disease and dry eye, we don't have enough reliable evidence to know whether it works.

Talk with your doctor about whether chitosan might help with your specific health goal.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chitosan is generally well tolerated over the short term, though the quality of safety data is limited. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: constipation, diarrhea, gas, stomach discomfort, and nausea.

One person with kidney disease reported itching during treatment, though it's unclear if chitosan caused it. Because chitosan is made from shellfish, it's a real concern for anyone with a shellfish allergy.

There isn't enough safety data to recommend chitosan during pregnancy or while breastfeeding—talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice before taking it if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Chitosan.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 3 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product if you take warfarin (Coumadin) or acyclovir (Zovirax). Warfarin is a blood thinner and chitosan may increase bleeding risk; acyclovir is an antiviral and chitosan may reduce how well it works.

Also tell your healthcare provider if you have a shellfish allergy, since chitosan is made from shellfish.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Chitosan Extract may be worth considering if you're interested in weight management or blood pressure support and you're not taking blood thinners or antivirals—but the evidence for these uses is preliminary. If you take warfarin or acyclovir, or if you have a shellfish allergy, this product isn't a good fit.

Chitosan Extract2 drug types · 3 drugs

Acyclovir (Zovirax)

Chitosan can reduce the absorption of acyclovir, potentially increasing the risk for treatment failure.
Clinical research in humans shows that taking chitosan along with acyclovir 200 mg reduces acyclovir absorption. Concomitant administration of chitosan 400 mg or 1000 mg reduced the acyclovir area under the curve (AUC) and peak plasma concentration by about 30% and 40%, respectively, compared with control. Concomitant administration with chitosan 1000 mg also increased time to peak concentration from 1 hour to 2 hours. In vitro research suggests that the mechanism for reduced absorption is due to acyclovir entrapment in chitosan-mucus complexes, which reduces intestinal absorption.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Theoretically, chitosan might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with warfarin.
In a case report, a patient taking warfarin had a significantly increased international normalized ratio (INR) after starting chitosan 1200 mg daily. The INR normalized after chitosan was discontinued and vitamin K was administered. The patient once again started taking chitosan and again had a significant increase in INR. The INR stabilized again once chitosan was discontinued. Researchers theorize that this interaction might occur because chitosan decreases absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamin K, which could increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin.
