Cramp Bark Plus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Cramp Bark Plus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Cramp Bark Plus contains 14 ingredients, most of them traditional Chinese herbs. The active components include Dong Quai (Tang Kuei), Red Peony, Motherwort (Leonurus), Cramp Bark, Cassia Cinnamon, Zedoary, and several others — Vladimiria Souliei, Moutan, Achyranthes, Cyperus, Carthamus, Corydalis, Sparganium, and Persica — all combined in a proprietary blend.
These herbs are traditionally used to address menstrual and muscular discomfort, though the scientific evidence for their effectiveness is limited. The tablet also contains inactive ingredients — vegetable gum, silicon dioxide, stearic acid, and cellulose — as binders and fillers to hold the formula together.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
The evidence for Cramp Bark Plus is not established in the data we hold. The individual herbs in this formula — including Cramp Bark itself, Motherwort, and Cassia Cinnamon — have been tested for conditions like muscle cramps, dysmenorrhea (painful periods), and other uses, but the studies show insufficient reliable evidence to rate them effective.
That doesn't mean they don't work; it means high-quality clinical trials supporting their use are lacking or inconclusive. Talk to your pharmacist about whether this product aligns with what you're hoping to address.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The herbs in this product are generally well tolerated in the short term, but several carry important cautions. Dong Quai may increase bleeding risk and cause skin sensitivity to sunlight.
Red Peony and Motherwort are traditionally used to affect the uterus and menstrual cycle, so they're not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding — the safety data simply aren't robust enough. Cassia Cinnamon in food amounts is fine, but the supplement doses here may contain higher levels of coumarin, a compound that can stress the liver if taken in large amounts over time.
Common side effects from these herbs, when they occur, include digestive upset (nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort), headache, or skin reactions in sensitive individuals.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before taking Cramp Bark Plus, double-check if you take blood thinners (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel) — Dong Quai carries a Major-severity risk, and Peony and Motherwort carry Moderate risks of increased bleeding. If you take estrogen-based hormone replacement therapy or hormonal contraceptives, Dong Quai and Red Peony may interfere with their effectiveness.
Mention diabetes medications — Cassia Cinnamon may have additive blood-sugar-lowering effects. If you take psychiatric medications like clozapine or certain cancer drugs that depend on liver metabolism, Red Peony and Zedoary may increase their levels.
No interactions are documented for Cramp Bark itself among the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Cramp Bark Plus is a multi-herb formula with a long history in traditional medicine, but solid evidence for its effectiveness is lacking. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, hormone-based contraceptives, or certain psychiatric drugs, you'll need to check your specific medications before starting — several ingredients here may interact.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first, as a few of these herbs are not recommended at those times. Use the medication checker below to verify your prescriptions.

Cramp Bark Plus by Health Concerns Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Cramp Bark Plus by Health Concerns has documented interactions with a number of medications.
The most serious concern is Dong Quai (Tang Kuei), which carries a Major-severity interaction with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner. Case reports show that dong quai can increase warfarin's blood-thinning effects and raise bleeding risk, sometimes significantly.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Several ingredients carry Moderate-severity interactions with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin or clopidogrel): Dong Quai, Red Peony, and Motherwort (Leonurus) may all increase bleeding risk. Red Peony and Dong Quai also interact theoretically with estrogens and hormone-based contraceptives, potentially reducing their effectiveness.
Red Peony can slow the metabolism of certain psychiatric and other drugs broken down by liver enzymes CYP1A2 and CYP3A4. Cassia Cinnamon may have additive effects with diabetes medications and, in high doses over time, may stress the liver when combined with other hepatotoxic drugs.
Zedoary may slow the metabolism of cancer drugs that depend on CYP3A4 breakdown.
Cramp Bark itself, when checked against our data, shows no documented interactions. We could not check several other ingredients — Vladimiria Souliei, Moutan, Achyranthes, Cyperus, Carthamus, Corydalis, Sparganium, and Persica — because interaction data is not on file for them.
Altogether, these interactions span 1,152 individual medications.

Red Peony
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, combining peony with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro research suggests that peony might have antiplatelet, anticoagulant, and antithrombotic effects.
Clozapine (Clozaril)
Theoretically, peony might increase the levels and clinical effects of clozapine.
In vitro research shows that peony suppresses the metabolism of clozapine via weak-to-moderate inhibitory effects on cytochromes P450 (CYP) 1A2 and CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, peony might interfere with contraceptive drugs due to competition for estrogen receptors.
In vitro and animal research shows that peony extract has estrogenic activity. Concomitant use might also increase the risk for estrogen-related adverse effects.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, use of peony may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that peony suppresses the metabolism of clozapine via weak-to-moderate inhibitory effects on CYP1A2 and CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, use of peony may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that peony suppresses the metabolism of clozapine via weak-to-moderate inhibitory effects on CYP1A2 and CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Estrogens
Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of peony might interfere with hormone replacement therapy and/or increase the risk for estrogen-related adverse effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that peony extract has estrogenic activity. Theoretically, peony might compete for estrogen receptors and/or cause additive estrogenic effects.
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
Theoretically, peony might reduce the levels and clinical effects of phenytoin.
Animal research shows that taking peony root reduces levels of phenytoin. Some researchers suggest that peony root might affect cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C9, which metabolizes phenytoin. However, preliminary research in humans shows that peony root does not alter levels of losartan (Cozaar), which is also metabolized by CYP2C9.
Zedoaria
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, zedoary might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In-vitro research shows that a methanol extract of zedoary strongly inhibits the CYP3A4 metabolism of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors lapatinib and sorafenib, and to a lesser extent, gefitinib.
Cinnamon
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, cassia cinnamon may have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Cassia cinnamon may lower blood glucose levels, and have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetic agents. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications might be necessary.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, large doses of cassia cinnamon might cause additive effects when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of cassia cinnamon for an extended duration might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which can cause hepatotoxicity in animal models. In humans, very high doses of coumarin from 50-7000 mg/day can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
Cyperus
Barbiturates
Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with sodium thiopental increases total sleep time three-fold compared to the effects of sodium thiopental alone. Theoretically, concomitant use of adrue and barbiturates might increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Some barbiturates include amobarbital (Amytal), butabarbital (Butisol), mephobarbital (Mebaral), pentobarbital (Nembutal), phenobarbital (Luminal), secobarbital (Seconal), and others.
Benzodiazepines
Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with diazepam increases total sleep time four-fold compared to the effects of diazepam alone. Theoretically, concomitant use adrue and benzodiazepines might increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Some benzodiazepines include clonazepam (Klonopin), diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), and others.
Cns Depressants
Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with sodium thiopental or diazepam increases total sleep time up to four-fold compared to the effects of the drugs alone. Theoretically, concomitant use of adrue with CNS depressants might cause additive sedation. Some CNS depressants include benzodiazepines, such as diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), triazolam (Halcion), and estazolam (ProSom); barbiturates, such as mephobarbital (Mebaral), phenobarbital (Luminal Sodium), and pentobarbital sodium (Nembutal); zolpidem (Ambien); and others.
Leonurus
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, taking motherwort concomitantly with other CNS depressants may increase the risk of sedation.
Motherwort has been reported to cause CNS depression and sedation.
Tang Kuei
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Dong quai may increase the risk of bleeding when used with warfarin.
Case reports suggest that concomitant use of dong quai with warfarin can increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin and increase the risk of bleeding. In one case, after 4 weeks of taking dong quai 565 mg once or twice daily, the international normalized ratio (INR) increased to 4.9. The INR normalized 4 weeks after discontinuation of dong quai.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, dong quai may increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs; however, research is conflicting.
Animal studies suggest that dong quai has antithrombin activity and inhibits platelet aggregation due to its coumarin components. Additionally, some case reports in humans suggest that dong quai can increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. However, clinical research in healthy adults shows that taking 1 gram of dong quai root daily for 3 weeks does not significantly inhibit platelet aggregation or cause bleeding. Until more is known, use dong quai with caution in patients taking antiplatelet/anticoagulant drugs.
Estrogens
Theoretically, dong quai may reduce the effects of estrogens.
Dong quai has estrogenic effects. Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of dong quai might interfere with hormone replacement therapy due to competition for estrogen receptors.
