- Vitamin D3 softgels supply this key vitamin in a highly-absorbable liquid softgel form. Vitamin D3 is converted by the kidneys into the hormone calcitriol, the activated form of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is normally obtained from animal foods in the diet or produced by the skin from the ultraviolet energy of the sun during optimal conditions. However, it is not abundant in food and as people increasingly avoid sun exposure during prime exposure times, Vitamin D supplementation becomes even more necessary to ensure receiving an adequate supply. In various clinical trials and epidemiological surveys, 60 percent or more of Americans have been found to be Vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D enhances the uptake of calcium from the diet, is necessary for bone and dental health, regulates immune activity and supports healthy cell division. Recent research indicates that Vitamin D also may play an important role in supporting cardiovascular health. Mechanisms include the inhibition of vascular smooth muscle proliferation, the suppression of vascular calcification, the down regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, the up regulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines, and the action of vitamin D as a negative endocrine regulator of the renin-angiotensin system in order to regulate vasoconstriction, arterial flow and normal repair of arterial tissues.
