What’s inside

Full disclosure

Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin at a 2500 mcg dose per softgel. Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin that your body doesn't store, so excess amounts leave through your urine.

The softgels also contain inactive ingredients — soybean oil, gelatin, glycerin, yellow beeswax, water, soy lecithin, and added colors — that form the capsule and help deliver the biotin.

Does it work?

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: support healthy hair, skin and nails.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biotin deficiency, Brittle nails, hair loss, nail health, skin health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for biotin deficiency — a real but uncommon shortage of this B vitamin. For other uses listed here, the evidence is weaker: it's considered possibly ineffective for multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis (a skin condition that causes flaking and inflammation), and there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it for alopecia areata (patchy hair loss).

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body excretes excess amounts in your urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea — a small number of people taking very large amounts (like 300 mg daily, far above this 2500 mcg dose) reported it.

One isolated case report described an inflammatory reaction in a 76-year-old woman taking biotin along with other supplements and a heart medication, but it's unclear whether biotin was the cause. The safety data rates biotin as likely safe during pregnancy and lactation at normal dietary and supplement amounts.

Because this is a high-dose product, check with your doctor before taking it if you're pregnant or nursing.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

This biotin supplement makes sense if you have a documented biotin deficiency or want to try it for hair, skin, or nails — though evidence for those last two is limited. If you're pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications, talk with your doctor first, especially since this is a high-dose product.

High Potency Biotin 2500 mcg by Nature Made: Common Questions

Does High Potency Biotin 2500 mcg by Nature Made interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in High Potency Biotin 2500 mcg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
High Potency Biotin 2500 mcg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this biotin supplement help my hair or nails grow?
The evidence doesn't support that claim here. Biotin is likely effective only for actual biotin deficiency. For hair loss and nails, there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.
Is biotin safe to take every day?
Yes — biotin is generally well tolerated even at high doses because your body gets rid of excess in your urine. The rare side effect reported was mild diarrhea in people taking much larger amounts than this dose.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Biotin is likely safe at normal dietary and supplement amounts during pregnancy and lactation, but this is a high-dose product. Talk with your doctor before starting it if you're pregnant or nursing.
What is biotin, and what does it do?
Biotin is a B vitamin that your body uses but can't store — excess leaves through your urine. It's likely effective for treating biotin deficiency, a rare condition where your body doesn't have enough of this vitamin.
Does this softgel contain any allergens?
Yes — it contains soy (in the soy lecithin) and gelatin. If you're allergic to either, this product isn't for you.
