What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: biotin at 2500 micrograms per softgel. Biotin is a B vitamin your body needs for healthy hair, skin, and nails, and to help convert food into energy.
The softgel also contains several inactive ingredients — soybean oil, gelatin, glycerin, yellow beeswax, water, soy lecithin, and added colors — that make up the capsule and help deliver the biotin.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Biotin is likely effective for treating biotin deficiency — a real but uncommon shortage of this vitamin in your body. For other uses like hair loss (alopecia areata), the evidence isn't reliable enough to say whether it works.
For multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly skin condition), the evidence suggests it's probably not effective.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at high doses, because your body clears excess amounts through urine. High-dose biotin has rarely caused mild diarrhea in a small number of people.
One case report described a possible reaction involving inflammation of the heart and lung lining in a patient taking biotin along with other supplements and medications, but it's unclear whether biotin was the cause. Normal dietary amounts and prenatal vitamin doses are fine, but talk with your doctor before taking high-dose supplements like this one.
Meds to double-check
No known interactions
No interactions are documented in our data for biotin. If you take any prescription medications, use the medication checker on this page to look them up, or ask your pharmacist to be certain.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.
This supplement is for people with a biotin deficiency or those hoping it might help with hair, skin, or nails — though the evidence for those last uses is thin. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, the standard amount from food and prenatal vitamins is likely safe, but check with your doctor about taking a high-dose product.
Run your medications through the checker on this page, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.
