Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product has one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin at 5 mg per capsule. Biotin supports your body's ability to break down and use carbohydrates, fats, and amino acids.

The capsule itself contains cellulose, an inactive ingredient that holds it together.

Does it work?

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: hair, skin and nails support, energy metabolism.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biotin deficiency, Brittle nails, hair loss, nail health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for biotin deficiency—a real shortage of this vitamin in your body. For multiple sclerosis, seborrheic dermatitis (a flaky skin condition), and hair loss (alopecia areata), the evidence doesn't support that biotin helps, or isn't strong enough yet to say either way.

If you're taking this for one of those reasons, talk with your doctor about what the science actually shows.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body clears excess amounts in your urine. The main caution: if you're pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant, stick to the amounts in food and prenatal vitamins—don't jump to high-dose supplements without checking with your doctor first.

At very high doses (300 mg daily or more), a small number of people have reported mild diarrhea. One rare case of inflammation around the heart and lungs was reported in a patient taking biotin 10 mg with other supplements and medications, but whether biotin was the cause is unclear, and no similar cases have been reported since.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

This product makes sense if you actually have a biotin deficiency, which your doctor can test for. For skin conditions or hair loss, the evidence doesn't support it.

Since no interactions are documented in our data, it's likely safe to combine with most medications, but check your specific drugs with the tool on this page and confirm with your own pharmacist or doctor before you start.

High Potency Biotin 5 mg by Country Life: Common Questions

Does High Potency Biotin 5 mg by Country Life interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in High Potency Biotin 5 mg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
High Potency Biotin 5 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is biotin safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Biotin is likely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The key: stick to amounts from food and prenatal vitamins. If you're thinking about taking a high-dose supplement like this one, check with your doctor first to make sure it's right for you.
What exactly is biotin and what does it do?
Biotin is a B vitamin your body uses to break down carbohydrates, fats, and amino acids—the building blocks of protein. A true biotin deficiency is rare, but if you have one, biotin supplements can help correct it.
Will biotin help my hair grow or treat hair loss?
The evidence for biotin in hair loss (alopecia areata) isn't strong enough yet to say it works. If that's why you're interested, talk with your doctor about what treatments actually have support behind them.
Can biotin cause side effects?
At the dose in this product (5 mg), side effects are uncommon. At much higher doses (300 mg or more daily), a small number of people have reported mild diarrhea. One very rare case of heart and lung inflammation was reported, but it's unclear whether biotin was responsible, and no other cases like it have surfaced.
Is there anything in this capsule besides biotin?
The capsule contains cellulose, which is an inactive ingredient that holds it together. The active ingredient is biotin alone.
