What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Beta-Hydroxy-Beta-Methylbutyrate (HMB), a metabolite that your body makes naturally from the amino acid leucine. HMB is included in the capsule along with two inactive ingredients — hypromellose and water — that serve as the capsule material and binder.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for what HMB does is mixed and depends on what you're taking it for. For sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss), it's rated possibly effective.
For physical performance and athletic performance, the evidence isn't strong enough to draw solid conclusions — physical performance is rated possibly ineffective, while athletic performance has insufficient evidence. For muscle fatigue, cachexia (severe muscle wasting), and radiation dermatitis, we don't have enough reliable data to rate it either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
HMB is generally well tolerated in healthy adults for short-term use, but we don't know much about what happens if you take it long-term. A small number of people in clinical trials reported mild digestive side effects — abdominal pain, constipation, indigestion, gas, heartburn, and nausea — and one person reported elevated blood pressure; itching was reported in two people.
Because there isn't enough safety data, the facts advise against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you're pregnant, nursing, or planning either, talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
No known interactions
No interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check. That doesn't mean none exist — it just means HMB hasn't been thoroughly studied for drug interactions.
If you're on any medications, it's worth a quick conversation with your pharmacist before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.
HMB may be worth considering if you're dealing with age-related muscle loss and want to explore a supplement with some evidence behind it. If you're mainly after better athletic or physical performance, the evidence doesn't clearly support it.
Talk with your pharmacist before starting, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or plan to take it long-term.
