What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: holy basil powder. Holy basil is an herbal extract traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine and studied for potential effects on anxiety, blood sugar, and inflammation.
There are no inactive ingredients listed for this formulation.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for holy basil isn't yet established for the conditions studied. Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness for generalized anxiety disorder, asthma, headache, respiratory tract infections, dental plaque, or diabetes.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means larger, higher-quality human studies are needed before we can say how well it performs for these uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil is generally well tolerated in the short term, though long-term safety data in humans are limited. The most common side effects reported in studies were loose stools and nausea when taken by mouth; a small number of trial participants experienced these.
Topically (in mouthwash), it caused a bitter taste. During pregnancy, animal data raise safety concerns and human data are too sparse to know either way — the safety rating advises against use.
Similarly, there isn't enough reliable information about safety while breastfeeding, so it's best avoided during that time. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether holy basil is right for you if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking holy basil, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel) — there's a moderate theoretical risk of increased bleeding. Also discuss it if you take diabetes medications, as holy basil may lower blood sugar further.
And if you take pentobarbital (Nembutal) or other sedatives, mention holy basil because it might increase sedative effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Holy basil may appeal to someone interested in herbal support for anxiety or blood sugar, but be cautious if you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or sedatives — check with your doctor or pharmacist first. It's not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Short-term use appears reasonably well tolerated, though we don't have robust long-term safety data.

Holy Basil by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Holy Basil by BulkSupplements.com does interact with medications, primarily through moderate-severity effects on blood thinners, diabetes drugs, and certain sedatives.
The most serious documented concern is a theoretical increase in bleeding risk when holy basil is combined with anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners). Animal studies show holy basil seed oil can slow blood clotting, though whether this happens in people isn't yet clear.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Holy basil may also lower blood sugar more than expected if you're already taking diabetes medications, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Small clinical studies support that holy basil can decrease fasting blood glucose on its own.
Additionally, holy basil seed oil might boost the sedative effects of pentobarbital (Nembutal) based on animal research, though again human data are lacking.
Altogether, these interactions span 212 individual medications. Before you start holy basil, run your exact medications through the checker on this page or talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether any blood thinners, diabetes drugs, or sedatives you take could be affected.

Holy Basil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil can prolong bleeding time, possibly due to inhibition of platelet aggregation. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Small clinical studies show that taking holy basil can decrease fasting blood glucose and other measures of glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the sedative effects of pentobarbital.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil increases pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans or if this applies to other barbiturates or sedatives.
