What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: holy basil powder at 500 mg per serving. There are no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that holy basil works for the conditions it's often used for. We rate its use for generalized anxiety disorder, asthma, headache, respiratory tract infections, dental plaque, and diabetes as having insufficient reliable evidence.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work—just that the quality or volume of study data isn't there yet to say one way or another.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil extract is generally well tolerated short-term in adults, but long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported with oral use are loose stools and nausea; a small number of trial participants experienced these.
The safety data advise against holy basil during pregnancy and while breastfeeding—animal data raise concerns and human safety isn't established for either.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check your medications if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (Moderate interaction—bleeding risk), diabetes medications (Moderate interaction—low blood sugar risk), or pentobarbital or other barbiturate sedatives (Moderate interaction—increased drowsiness).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Holy basil might appeal to you if you're interested in traditional herbal use for anxiety or wellness, but the evidence for its benefits isn't solid yet. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or sedative barbiturates, you'll want to check with your pharmacist first.
And if you're pregnant or nursing, skip it and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what is safe for you.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Holy Basil Powder 500 mg from BulkSupplements.com contains one active ingredient—holy basil—that has documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern involves blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs: animal research shows holy basil seed oil can prolong bleeding time, possibly by slowing how platelets clump together, which could theoretically raise your bleeding risk. We don't yet know if this happens in people, but it's worth discussing with your pharmacist if you take any blood thinner.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Holy basil may also lower blood sugar (a Moderate interaction with diabetes medications), based on small clinical studies showing it can decrease fasting blood glucose. And there's theoretical concern that holy basil seed oil could strengthen the drowsy effects of pentobarbital (Nembutal), a sedative barbiturate, though again this is from animal work and hasn't been confirmed in humans.
Altogether, these interactions span 211 individual medications. If you take any of these drug types—blood thinners, diabetes medications, or sedative barbiturates—please check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before you start.
