Full disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check

Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • “L-Lysine” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label gives one combined amount (500 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

This product has one active ingredient: L-lysine hydrochloride, an amino acid your body needs for protein synthesis and immune function. The tablet also contains inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose (a filler), vegetarian coating, silicon dioxide, and magnesium stearate — that help hold the tablet together and keep it shelf-stable.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: supports collagen synthesis and immune function.
  • We looked for evidence on: Herpes labialis (cold sores), Pressure ulcers, Wound healing, Connective tissue health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lysine is rated "Possibly Effective" for Herpes labialis (cold sores) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lysine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Pressure ulcers.

L-lysine is possibly effective for herpes labialis (cold sores), meaning some evidence supports its use but more research would strengthen that claim. For child growth, pressure ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers, the evidence isn't established in our data — we hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate how well it works for these uses.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-lysine is generally well tolerated at typical doses, though high amounts may cause stomach upset, and long-term safety hasn't been well studied. The most common side effects reported orally are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and indigestion.

There is one case report of oral lysine linked to kidney inflammation that progressed to chronic kidney failure, though this is extremely rare. For pregnancy, supplement safety hasn't been well studied — lysine from food is fine, but talk with your doctor before taking a supplement.

For breastfeeding, there isn't enough reliable information, so caution is advised and you should discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist.

Minor interactions only
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Lysine.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • For scale: 1 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take a 5-HT4 agonist (a medication for certain gut conditions), check with your pharmacist before starting — lysine may reduce how well it works. For all other medications, no interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.

L-lysine is a reasonable choice if you're looking to manage cold sores, since it's possibly effective for that. If you take a 5-HT4 agonist, check with your pharmacist before adding this — it may weaken that medication's effect.

Pregnant or breastfeeding? Talk to your doctor first.

Otherwise, it's generally well tolerated, but let your pharmacist know if you develop stomach upset or diarrhea.

Formula

Lysine is an essential amino acid that must be obtained through the diet or through supplementation. Lysine is necessary for the production of all proteins in the body, and is required for the maintenance of the structural proteins collagen and elastin, which form all connective tissue such as skin, tendon, and bone. Lysine is also a precursor to carnitine, which is needed for fat metabolism and energy production. In addition, Lysine may help to support a healthy immune system and proper cardiovascular function.
