What’s inside
Full disclosure
This powder contains one active ingredient: L-lysine hydrochloride, an amino acid (a building block of protein) your body uses in many ways. The product has no inactive ingredients listed.
Each serving delivers lysine in a straightforward form with nothing else mixed in.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-lysine is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis) — meaning some evidence supports its use, though more research would help confirm how well it works. For other uses listed in the research, including child growth, pressure ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers, the evidence isn't established enough to rate it one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lysine from food is safe; when taken as a supplement, it's generally well tolerated at typical doses. High amounts may cause stomach upset, and long-term safety hasn't been thoroughly studied.
The most common side effects reported with oral use are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and indigestion. Supplement safety in pregnancy hasn't been well studied — lysine from food is fine, but check with your doctor before taking a supplement.
There isn't enough reliable information on supplement use while breastfeeding, so caution is advised and you should talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take a 5-HT4 agonist medication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product — lysine may reduce how well it works.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
L-lysine is worth considering if you're looking for a possibly effective option for cold sores and want a straightforward single-ingredient supplement. If you take a 5-HT4 agonist medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — the interaction is minor but real.
Pregnant or breastfeeding people should discuss this supplement with their doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Formula
Lysine is an essential amino acid that must be obtained through the diet or through supplementation. Lysine is necessary for the production of all proteins in the body, and is required for the maintenance of the structural proteins collagen and elastin, which form all connective tissue such as skin, tendon, and bone. Lysine is also a precursor to carnitine, which is needed for fat metabolism and energy production. In addition, lysine may help to support a healthy immune system and proper cardiovascular function.

Through its L-lysine hydrochloride content, it may reduce the effects of 5-HT4 agonists (medications that work through serotonin receptor 4) — a Minor interaction.
