This softgel contains one active ingredient: 20 mg of lutein, a carotenoid — a plant pigment — that accumulates in the eye, especially the macula, the part responsible for sharp central vision. The softgel capsule also contains gelatin, safflower oil, glycerin, carob extract, purified water, and beeswax as inactive ingredients to deliver the lutein.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts — two common eye conditions linked to aging. For other conditions we have data on, the evidence does not support its use: retinitis pigmentosa, necrotizing enterocolitis, retinopathy of prematurity, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia are all rated possibly ineffective.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, lutein from food and typical supplement doses is generally well tolerated. Doses up to 20 mg daily — the amount in this product — have not resulted in adverse effects in the data we hold.
The caution is that while lutein from food is safe and lutein naturally appears in breast milk, there is not enough data on the safety of higher supplement doses in pregnancy and lactation, so check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you are pregnant or nursing.
