Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: liver extract, which is freeze-dried (lyophilized) organ tissue. It's packaged in gelatin capsules with silica and purified water as inactive ingredients.

Liver extract is a whole-food concentrate meant to deliver the nutritional compounds found in beef liver, including heme iron, B vitamins, and vitamin K.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Liver Extract product and its label doesn't state a use — see Liver Extract's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for liver extract is sparse. For chronic fatigue syndrome, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective — meaning studies haven't shown meaningful benefit.

For hepatitis C, we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works. If you're considering this product for a specific health concern, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist about what the evidence actually shows and whether other options might be better studied.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

No adverse reactions have been reported in the data we hold, but a complete safety review hasn't been done. The bigger concerns are source and content.

Liver extract can deliver very high levels of vitamin A and iron, which can be problematic in large amounts or over time. Because it's made from raw animal liver from slaughterhouses — which may come from sick or diseased animals — there's a theoretical risk of contamination.

There's also concern about bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, also called mad cow disease) in liver extracts from countries where the disease has been reported, though no cases of BSE transmission to humans from liver extract products have been documented. If you're pregnant, liver extract's high vitamin A content may harm your developing baby — the safety data advises against it unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

For breastfeeding, the safety data isn't on file, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.

Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Liver Extract.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 3 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you start, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take warfarin (Coumadin) — a blood thinner — or any iron supplements or iron-containing medications. Both interactions are Minor, but they're worth confirming with your own healthcare provider.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.

Liver extract is a whole-food supplement with minimal documented side effects in healthy adults, but it's not well studied and carries real concerns about vitamin A and iron content and potential source contamination. If you take warfarin or iron supplements, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

If you're pregnant, avoid it unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider. It's best to discuss this product with your doctor or pharmacist to decide if it fits your situation.

Formula

Lyophilized Liver Extract is a specially prepared nutritional supplement derived from organically grazed cattle and contains absolutely no trace of pesticides or synthetic hormones. Prior to extraction, the liver is lyophilized (freeze-dried) to protect the delicate nucleoproteins and polypeptides from denaturation. Then it is subject to hydrolysis to extract a high concentration of super oxide dismutase and catalase. These nutrients are potent antioxidants and serve as a support to liver function.

Iron

Liver extract can contain heme iron. Taking liver extract with iron-containing medications or supplements may increase total iron intake and could increase the risk of gastrointestinal adverse effects or excessive iron accumulation. The risk is greater with high doses, prolonged use, or in individuals with hemochromatosis or another iron-overload disorder. Review the iron content of the liver extract and the total elemental iron dose. Avoid unnecessary duplicate iron supplementation and consider monitoring ferritin and transferrin saturation when clinically appropriate.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Liver extract products may contain small and variable amounts of vitamin K. Theoretically, starting, stopping, or substantially changing the amount of liver extract used could reduce the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and lower the INR. However, this interaction has not been directly studied or reported in humans, and the vitamin K content of liver extract products is generally not standardized. Consider monitoring the INR after a meaningful change in liver extract use.

Lyophilized Liver Extract by Ecological Formulas: Common Questions

Does Lyophilized Liver Extract by Ecological Formulas interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Lyophilized Liver Extract has a known interaction with 3 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Lyophilized Liver Extract contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is liver extract safe for pregnant people?
No — liver extract can deliver very high vitamin A, which may harm a developing baby. The safety data advises against it unless your doctor tells you it's necessary and the benefits outweigh the risks. Talk with your doctor before considering it during pregnancy.
Can I take this if I'm breastfeeding?
The safety data for breastfeeding isn't on file. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it while breastfeeding to weigh the pros and cons for your situation.
What is liver extract supposed to do?
It's a freeze-dried concentrate of beef liver meant to deliver nutrients found in whole liver, including heme iron, B vitamins, and vitamin K. However, evidence for most health claims is sparse or lacking.
Does this actually help with chronic fatigue?
The available evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective for chronic fatigue syndrome. If you're dealing with fatigue, talk with your doctor about approaches with stronger evidence behind them.
Where does the liver come from, and is it safe?
Liver extract is made from raw animal liver sourced from slaughterhouses, which may come from sick or diseased animals. There's also a theoretical risk of BSE (mad cow disease) contamination in products from certain countries, though no human cases have been reported. If you're concerned about the source, ask the maker which countries their liver comes from.
Could this cause an iron overload?
Liver extract contains heme iron. If you're already taking iron supplements or have a condition like hemochromatosis, combining them could increase your iron intake and raise the risk of problems. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on iron therapy.
