Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin supplied at 5000 micrograms (mcg) per capsule. Biotin plays a role in how your body processes fats, carbohydrates, and amino acids — the building blocks of protein.

The capsule itself is made from vegetable cellulose and gelatin, with vegetable magnesium stearate added as a release agent.

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: biotin essential nutrient energy production metabolism.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biotin deficiency, Hair health, Nail health, Skin health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).

Biotin is likely effective for biotin deficiency — the condition it's most commonly used for. For other uses listed here, the evidence is weaker: it's rated possibly ineffective for multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis, and there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it for alopecia areata (hair loss in patches).

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body excretes excess amounts in the urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea; one trial reported transient mild diarrhea in 2 participants taking 300 mg daily — far higher than the 5000 mcg (5 mg) in this product.

One isolated case report described a serious reaction (eosinophilic pleuropericarditis), but it occurred in a patient taking multiple supplements and other medications, and causation could not be confirmed. There have been no other similar reports.

Biotin is rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation. That said, if you're pregnant or nursing and thinking about taking a high-dose supplement, check with your doctor first — amounts from food and prenatal vitamins are appropriate, but discuss high-dose products to be sure.

Mega Biotin 5000 mcg by DC: Common Questions

Does Mega Biotin 5000 mcg by DC interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Mega Biotin 5000 mcg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Mega Biotin 5000 mcg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will biotin help my hair loss?
The evidence isn't established. Biotin is rated as having insufficient reliable evidence for alopecia areata — the patchy kind of hair loss. If that's what you're dealing with, talk with your doctor about other options that have stronger evidence behind them.
Can I take this while I'm pregnant?
Biotin is rated likely safe in pregnancy. However, this is a high-dose supplement. Check with your doctor first — normal amounts from food and prenatal vitamins are fine, but high-dose products warrant a quick conversation to make sure it's right for your situation.
What's the difference between this dose and what I get from food?
Food sources of biotin — like eggs, almonds, and sweet potatoes — supply much smaller amounts. This product gives you 5000 mcg (5 mg), which is well above typical dietary intake. That's why your doctor may want to weigh in before you take a high-dose supplement.
Is biotin safe at this dose?
Biotin is generally well tolerated at fairly high doses because excess is removed in your urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea, but serious side effects are extremely rare. Still, run it by your doctor or pharmacist first.
Will this help my seborrheic dermatitis?
The evidence doesn't support it — biotin is rated possibly ineffective for seborrheic dermatitis. Your dermatologist or doctor can suggest treatments with better evidence for this condition.
